Learning Objectives:

  1. Describe skin structure and function in relation to the physiology of wound healing.
  2. Contrast intrinsic and extrinsic factors that may compromise wound healing.
  3. Explain essential components to complete wound assessment and documentation.
  4. Differentiate between arterial, venous, neuropathic, pressure ulcers, incontinent associated dermatitis and end of life wounds.
  5. Correlate the appropriate wound dressing/product to a variety of wounds.
  6. Explain prevention strategies to avoid pressure ulcerations.
  7. Identify common and atypical dermatologic disorders and treatment strategies.
  8. Present palliative treatment intervention and pain management plans for various wound types.
  9. Identify strategies for management of complex fistulas.
  10. Identify documentation strategies for unavoidable wounds.
  11. Account for the emotional and psychological effects of end-of-life wounds for patients and families.
  12. Discuss the impact of compassion fatigue and burnout for health care workers caring for patients with extensive non healing wounds.
