Finding Comfort and Connection in the Hardest of Times

Finding Comfort and Connection in the Hardest of Times
Through the personalized care at Carolyn’s House and the ongoing support of Hospice of Central PA’s bereavement programs, Kevin Frantz found solace, healing and a way to honor his wife’s legacy. Hospice of Central PA is the sister organization of Hospice & Community Care.

Kevin Frantz lost his wife of 26 years, Denise, to melanoma in October 2022. What began in July 2020 as a seemingly minor concern—a mole on Denise’s knee—quickly turned into a life-altering diagnosis. Tests revealed the melanoma had spread to her lymph nodes. After two surgeries, a lung biopsy and a year of immunotherapy, Kevin and Denise were hopeful they had turned a corner.

However, in March 2022, another melanoma spot was discovered on the same leg. Denise underwent additional surgery and resumed immunotherapy, but the disease had progressed. It eventually spread to her brain, lungs and liver.

In her final days, Denise received care at Carolyn’s House, Hospice of Central PA’s dedicated hospice residence. There, the team provided not only expert medical care but also heartfelt support to Kevin and their extended family—many of whom traveled from out of town to be by Denise’s side. Kevin remembers the peace and compassion shown during this incredibly difficult time.

What Kevin did not anticipate was the ongoing support he would receive from Hospice of Central PA after Denise’s passing. For more than a year, he has participated in the organization’s bereavement offerings through The Journey Program, including Growing Through GriefWalk and Talk and Harmony, a support group specifically for those grieving the loss of a spouse or partner.

“These programs have played a vital role in my healing,” Kevin shared. “Before attending, I never realized how comforting it is to talk with people who truly understand your loss. These programs can’t change what’s happened, but they do remind us that we’re not alone—and sharing our stories with others is a powerful part of healing.”

Denise had two heartfelt wishes: to see their children graduate in the spring of 2023 and to help others facing a melanoma diagnosis feel less alone. Though she wasn’t able to fulfill those goals, Kevin hopes that by sharing their story, Denise’s spirit of compassion will continue to bring hope to others.

Hospice of Central PA is dedicated to ensuring no one faces their grief journey alone. With the support of bereavement services through The Journey Program and the expert care at Carolyn’s House, individuals and families receive the comfort and connection they need during life’s most challenging moments.
